If you are offering remote access support, it is important that the Software is easy to download and configure, because the person on the other end is not necessarily tech-savvy. And if you are primarily interested in accessing specific computers, you want software that you connect to securely and that runs in the background. TeamViewer does both very well and also offers some of the most fluid remotes on the market. It also works on several platforms and is free for non-commercial use. It’s a bit expensive for professional use, but that doesn’t prevent it from receiving our Editors’ Choice Award for remote access software.

How much does TeamViewer cost?

TeamViewer sells a variety of services, mainly for companies, but here I am focusing on TeamViewer for individual users.

For a long time, the Free Version had all the features of TeamViewer, but now it is limited. To summarize, free users cannot get video or Audio Chat, can only transfer one file at a time and can only add three managed devices. Beyond that, however, home users benefit from everything that TeamViewer has to offer, which is ideal for people who provide volunteer technical support to their friends and family.

The TeamViewer remote access plan allows a licensed person to access up to three unattended devices. TeamViewer Business allows a single licensed person to manage up to 200 computers, and you get phone support and a few other business-oriented features. In addition, plans are drawn up for teams and companies. They cost much more and allow more licensed users.

Is TeamViewer really free?

The free Version of TeamViewer is applied by an AI that detects commercial activities that block access to users it deems suspicious. Some legitimate home users are caught by the AI and cut off. Many negative reviews on Google Play or The App Store complain that accounts are deactivated automatically and without warning. However, such matters tend to be extreme. One of these reviewers claims to have used TeamViewer to play PC games on his Mac, and I find it understandable that the bandwidth required for an algorithm looks like commercial use. (Virtualization software or Steam remote playback would serve you better anyway.) In any matter, users can appeal, so it is more of a nuisance than a decisive factor.

Support for the TeamViewer platform

TeamViewer offers Clients for macOS, Linux and mobile platforms. I tested the software on computers running Windows 10, Windows 11 and macOS 14 and found that all these versions support all the features I expected. The macOS version of TeamViewer is feature-rich – nothing is not found or working.

Getting started with TeamViewer

By nature, the remote access software must be installed on at least two computers: The computer you want to access remotely and the computer from which you are connecting. It is preferable that this process is simple, especially if you need to guide someone by phone throughout the Installation.

To get started, go to TeamViewer.com and download the Client. TeamViewer is rolling out a new user interface for the desktop application to connect to devices—from July 2024 you will have the option of using the long-standing interface or the new interface (see below). I find the old user interface easier to navigate than the new one, which seems to be based on the web version of TeamViewer, although work is still underway. However, the changes are purely cosmetic, since the actual process of remote access to other devices has not changed, regardless of which interface you use.

Smooth Control

I tested TeamViewer both on my local home network and outside near a food cart in Portland, Oregon, which doesn’t offer a particularly good Wi-Fi connection. I connected to a Windows 11 computer from a Macbook, an iPad and a laptop running Windows 10. TeamViewer worked very well in all these combinations.

Share files (and your face)

TeamViewer provides a file transfer mode for each device you are connected to. It displays a two-pane file browser where all files from both computers are available for sending and receiving, allowing you to transfer files directly from a folder on one device to a folder on another.
